Possible, To Increase The Lifespan Of Hids? It May Be A ‘Yes’ With The Slightly Modified Usage Of Them!!

HIDs have already got predominance over conventional halogen bulbs, in automobile headlamps. Many countries have now legalized the use of HID lamps in both urban and rural areas.  But, in spite of its varied usage in different parts across the world, there always persisted a problem regarding the lifespan of HIDs when used in automotive headlamps. It was a matter of serious concern as, HIDs cost more than halogen bulbs and a quick replace of the same might not be affordable and appreciable in any manner. Although HIDs offers a much higher life span, it was not economically sufficient when we consider its cost. This problem is getting solved as experts come up with proven answers to this lifespan problem. According to them, the average lifespan of the HIDs can be increased, if we slightly alter the usage of them in real life.

What shortens the lifespan of HIDs & how to tackle it?

Unlike the halogen bulbs, HIDs lack in filaments. They are replaced with different gases in HID lamps, to form an arc of high intensity discharge, when light gets passed through them. We know, HIDs requires a comparatively low voltage to start with and as they warm up, they get into a requirement of high voltage. As time goes, the lights become wearer or aged, this high voltage becomes too high such that, the ballast finds it difficult to withstand. This process is known as cyclic degradation which is commonly seen in all types of HIDs. But now, it is able to solve this issue with some procedures. They are:
  • Affirm that, filled gases inside an HID lamp does not leak. The leakage of the gases can cause high voltage inside ballast as proper discharge does not occur.
  • Regulate the power supply, by not providing enough high voltage for HIDs. This may alter the performance of HIDs a bit, but contributes a lot in increasing life span of HIDs.
  • Make sure that, small wear and tear to HID lamps are duly cleared with. Sometimes, a small hole is enough to sink a huge ship.
  • Assure that same pair of HIDs are used in a kit. Inappropriate pairs can cause voltage deviation, which sometimes lead to HIDs shorter life span.
  • Deal only with good and genuine replacement products so that, we could assume for a longer life span of HID lamps.

Can the dual mode really help you to increase HID life?

Many renowned automobile manufacturers have now started using dual mode HIDs in their modern vehicles. They claim that, the use of this dual mode can contribute a lot to the longevity of HID bulbs. In this dual mode, the HIDs produces a maximum discharge only when needed and the user can relatively switch between high intensity and reduced intensity. With urban roads and also during daylights, the high intensity discharge of an HID is not necessary. In all such scenarios, a less intensity HID can be really useful. When for normal use, lower intensity bulbs are used and for relevant purposes, high intensity diodes are used, a large amount of voltage heat can be reduced which surely increase the lifespan of the HIDs. HID Bulbs Wants To Tell You:The History And Its Future Trends

Hid Technologies and its huge impact on car headlight technology

Going back to the history and finding more about HID bulbs and its technologies is going to be interesting. Its launch created a great impact and left almost a good impression on the minds of the public. They were considered as the magic bulbs which were fitted onto luxurious cars belonging to the higher economic classes and this category of cars included BMW and Mercedes Benz. With the eye-catchy and glittering colors that filled the half portion of the roadway when the vehicle swept on it was a gasping scene for the public. And more interestingly, it had a magical effect that traditional halogen headlight bulbs did not possess and thus became the reason for its high reputation. Click here for more details.

Future trends in HIDs technology

The global automotive lighting system is said to cross its 25th billion during the period 2014-2019 and a major contribution is by the HID bulb technologies (the other LED lights, adding to the effect). The public is being encouraged to purchase them through legal websites or directly through stores, considering its high efficiency rate and its capability to last for a lifetime. Big brand companies have come forward with hybrid notions clubbing up various lighting technologies that shoot up the power of individual components like HID ballasts. Many features like retrofitting have encouraged the “money savers” to convert their traditional halogens to HID bulbs.

HID bulbs:An overview

Moving onto the cons, it has high price tags attached to it which became the drawbacking feature and due to this reason, they are still not being used by the public, in comparison to the halogen bulbs. What people forget is that, HID bulbs and its counterparts are made with highly advanced technologies and obviously the rate is going to be high!!

Another disadvantage to be mentioned in this regard is, when people were encouraged to purchase HID bulbs and its wide usage was promoted; the functionality of the HIDs turned to be a great disadvantage. The high intensity bulbs producing lights were capable of blinding the drivers in the opposite direction and soon, cases of accidents and severe injuries were reported as a consequence of this. Many of the grand cities like New York banned the usage of HID lights and colored HIDS like green HIDs and soon HID manufacturing companies were at a loss. But soon the prevailing condition changed with updating features on these bulbs and its counterparts. And what's more!! Some of the clauses of the ban were lifted and HID kits again become the new generation bulbs with modifications that changed the complete scenario.Even now, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) does not support the usage of the magic bulbs as it gives out an unnatural beam pattern; giving a glaring effect.

Colored HIDs and its safety feature

Colors are surely going to attract the public and this feature is being highlighted when colored HIDs came into existence. Launching of 13 colored HIDs including icy white combinations to aqua blue and green colors certainly became the reason for its enhanced usage. If aesthetic aspect is your first preference in the “wish list”, then you are in for it as colored HIDs are available in affordable price ranges. Functionality feature is also being enhanced with the introduction of HIDs with a slightly higher price tag but ensuring higher terms of longevity.

Is it legal to buy the hids?

Lots of confusion arises around the hid kits. Several people need brighter hids bulbs benefits and have seen them on the executive vehicles. Wide range of hid kits is there on market and most of them are at affordable rates but many customers are not informed fully true picture. HID kits may pass the MOT test but this doesn’t have a meaning that it’s legal on road.  Hids lights are actually legal if units of headlights are marked with ‘E’. Xenon hid and halogen units of headlights have different ’E’ marks. One only method to make the hid kit legal is replacing the whole units of headlights with the one specifically designed for hid or the existing units of headlights is reassesses for the compliance and are then assigned with the new 'E' mark. As you could imagine, this is very vastly expensive and inconvenient. In short, unless if fail to take all these steps then your vehicle will be illegal.

What about the Hids quality?
