Possible, To Increase The Lifespan Of Hids? It May Be A ‘Yes’ With The Slightly Modified Usage Of Them!!

HIDs have already got predominance over conventional halogen bulbs, in automobile headlamps. Many countries have now legalized the use of HID lamps in both urban and rural areas.  But, in spite of its varied usage in different parts across the world, there always persisted a problem regarding the lifespan of HIDs when used in automotive headlamps. It was a matter of serious concern as, HIDs cost more than halogen bulbs and a quick replace of the same might not be affordable and appreciable in any manner. Although HIDs offers a much higher life span, it was not economically sufficient when we consider its cost. This problem is getting solved as experts come up with proven answers to this lifespan problem. According to them, the average lifespan of the HIDs can be increased, if we slightly alter the usage of them in real life.

What shortens the lifespan of HIDs & how to tackle it?

Unlike the halogen bulbs, HIDs lack in filaments. They are replaced with different gases in HID lamps, to form an arc of high intensity discharge, when light gets passed through them. We know, HIDs requires a comparatively low voltage to start with and as they warm up, they get into a requirement of high voltage. As time goes, the lights become wearer or aged, this high voltage becomes too high such that, the ballast finds it difficult to withstand. This process is known as cyclic degradation which is commonly seen in all types of HIDs. But now, it is able to solve this issue with some procedures. They are:
  • Affirm that, filled gases inside an HID lamp does not leak. The leakage of the gases can cause high voltage inside ballast as proper discharge does not occur.
  • Regulate the power supply, by not providing enough high voltage for HIDs. This may alter the performance of HIDs a bit, but contributes a lot in increasing life span of HIDs.
  • Make sure that, small wear and tear to HID lamps are duly cleared with. Sometimes, a small hole is enough to sink a huge ship.
  • Assure that same pair of HIDs are used in a kit. Inappropriate pairs can cause voltage deviation, which sometimes lead to HIDs shorter life span.
  • Deal only with good and genuine replacement products so that, we could assume for a longer life span of HID lamps.

Can the dual mode really help you to increase HID life?

Many renowned automobile manufacturers have now started using dual mode HIDs in their modern vehicles. They claim that, the use of this dual mode can contribute a lot to the longevity of HID bulbs. In this dual mode, the HIDs produces a maximum discharge only when needed and the user can relatively switch between high intensity and reduced intensity. With urban roads and also during daylights, the high intensity discharge of an HID is not necessary. In all such scenarios, a less intensity HID can be really useful. When for normal use, lower intensity bulbs are used and for relevant purposes, high intensity diodes are used, a large amount of voltage heat can be reduced which surely increase the lifespan of the HIDs.
